Kate Middleton and Prince William have penned a moving letter to a widow after her husband died of cancer.

Father-of-two Pete Morris, 47, died from cancer in May, weeks after the Princess of Wales revealed her own diagnosis to the world in a moving video message which stunned the world.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had met Pete during a royal visit to South Wales last year, buying £127.50 on 12 pizzas from him for local mountain rescue workers. Tragically, months later, doctors found he had cancer in his adrenal gland and liver and he passed away in the spring.

Ahead of his funeral, the couple wrote a letter to his widow Tracey which was read out during the service. In the letter, William wrote, ‘I wanted to write to express how terribly sorry Catherine and I were to hear the very sad news about your husband Pete, and to send you our deepest sympathies. We can only begin to imagine what an immense hole he will leave in your life and my heart goes out to you and your family.

‘Catherine and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Pete and serving pizzas to everyone from the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team.

We know that Pete was a hugely dedicated and highly valued member of the community which has been evident from the response to his passing. I hope you can draw comfort from the knowledge of the impact he has had on so many people.

‘I appreciate that this letter alone can be of little comfort under such circumstance, but I did want you to know just how much you and your family are in our thoughts at such a difficult time.

Beneath the printed letter, William had written in his own hand ‘with my deepest condolences’, before signing off the note.

His wife Tracey told The Sun that the letter had come as a ‘massive surprise’ saying, ‘I don’t even know how they found out Pete had died. It may have hit a chord with them because Kate Middleton is going through treatment.’
