A new wave of international pressure is building in Washington as senior diplomats, advocacy groups, and African democracy watchdogs urge U.S. President Donald Trump to take a bold stance on Cameroon’s deepening political crisis.
According to multiple reports from Capitol Hill, influential voices within the U.S. foreign policy community are calling on Trump to formally recognize Cameroon’s main opposition leader as the rightful president-elect, following what they describe as “massive electoral irregularities” and “systemic voter suppression” under the long-standing rule of President Paul Biya.
Biya, who has ruled Cameroon since 1982, has faced growing criticism both domestically and abroad for alleged human rights violations, electoral manipulation, and a crackdown on dissent. Civil unrest in the country’s Anglophone regions has also intensified, with reports of violence, arbitrary arrests, and humanitarian crises driving global concern.
Pro-democracy advocates in the U.S. are now calling for Trump to impose heavy sanctions on Biya’s regime — targeting top officials, freezing assets, and restricting travel — in a bid to “force a peaceful transition of power and uphold the will of the Cameroonian people.”
A statement released by a Washington-based African affairs coalition read:
> “The time has come for the United States to stand with the people of Cameroon, not their oppressors. President Trump should recognize the opposition as the democratically elected authority and demand Biya’s immediate resignation.”
While the White House has not issued an official response, insiders suggest that discussions are underway within the National Security Council about possible diplomatic and economic actions. Analysts say such a move by Trump would mark a historic shift in U.S.-Africa relations and could send a powerful signal about America’s stance on democracy across the continent.
As tensions escalate in Yaoundé, the world watches closely — and Cameroonians, both at home and abroad, await the next move from Washington.
