Charles Omenihu‘s journey with the Chiefs has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Back in 2023, the Chiefs brought him on with a two-year deal, and things were looking up. But then, during the AFC Championship against the Ravens, he tore his ACL, sidelining him for Super Bowl LVIII. Sure, he got the ring, but not the on-field glory. Fast forward to the next season, and the injury bug bit again, landing him on IR right out of the gate.
He made his comeback in November, just in time to chase that elusive active-player Super Bowl experience. Finally, under the bright lights of Caesars Superdome, he got his shot. But the fairy tale ending? Nah, not this time. The Chiefs fell to the Eagles, and Omenihu was visibly emotional on the sidelines, tears streaming down as the reality set in. On Friday, Charles Omenihu appeared at The Facility, and when asked, “What led this to the tears and just talk about it,” he revealed the reason why he broke down after the loss against the Eagles.
So, I put my all into trying to be the best I can for this organization with the strip sacks with the big plays… last year played in the AFC Championship game. Got to strip-sack the whole nine and then the next play torn ACL, not playing a Super Bowl…So, then to come through all the rehab, come back, help the team again get to Super Bowl, and in that Super Bowl you getting whoop like that.”
Can’t blame him for feeling that way. Yeah, he was with the Chiefs last season when they took down the Niners for that back-to-back title. But Omenihu wanted to be out there, making plays, earning that ring the hard way. And when he finally got his shot, it just didn’t go his way. The kicker?
This season was the last of his two-year deal with the Kansas City team. That said, he’s all set to hit the free agency in 2025. The organization is looking to lose some players to build salary cap space after a disastrous 22-40 Super Bowl loss. Now, here’s the thing: the 27-year-old DE has been with the Chiefs for a couple of years, and now he’s kind of accustomed to playing in the conference championships and the Super Bowl.
But! If the Chiefs decide to make a tough call and part ways with him, then Omenihu may not get a chance to be on that big stage again—at least, that’s what the defensive end believes. “I was saying like, I may not even be back with the Chiefs, so who should say that I ever get another chance to play on that stage again,” he continued.
“You know what I’m saying like I’ve gotten very accustomed to all I know is conference championships and then the Super Bowl for the last four years…And I’m going to year seven and like I want to continue to be on that type of trajectory. It’s like going to these big games and so it was hard for me to be in that space. Us losing that bad, reality setting in of like what a real possibility could.” He’s right by every word. Not just Omenihu, but the whole team was rooting for the unprecedented three-peat, but the Eagles had other plans and the reality pulled up like a blitz, especially for Patrick Mahomes and the veteran tight end, Travis Kelce.
The brotherhood of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce
Playing side-by-side with each other for almost a decade now, and Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have already been a part of 5 Super Bowls together. Their resume? Three Super Bowl wins out of five. Of course, the juggernaut duo failed to create a history by winning three back-to-back titles. But their brotherhood still remains the same.
After losing to Jalen Hurts‘ Eagles, Mahomes and Kelce’s heartfelt conversation came to light. The quarterback and the tight end were seen embracing each other with a pound hug. The two-time MVP approached the veteran tight end, embracing him with a hug, and commented, “I love you brother.” To his response, Kelce shared the same heartfelt message to his QB. “I love you, dawg,” the 35-year-old responded. “You know that. I owe you a lot.”
The video stole the spotlight right in the middle of all the Kelce retirement talk. Because, let’s be real, that became the hot topic after the Super Bowl loss. But as for Kelce? He’s not rushing into anything. Sure, he knows a big decision is coming, but he made it clear—no wild moves just yet, and he wants to be there for his teammates and coaches.
During his recent episode of the New Heights Podcast, he stated, “I am kicking every can I can down the road. I am not making any crazy decisions. But right now the biggest thing is just being there for my teammates and being there for my coaches understanding there’s a lot that goes into this thing.”
As for Mahomes? Well, he was assuring his teammates after a tough loss to the Eagles, stating, “We’ll be back” and “We’re going to do it again.” Now, it’s not confirmed whether Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ gonna do it again with Kelce or not. But one thing’s clear: the team is planning to reclaim the throne.
