French Open: Tennis Fans Lambast Chris Evert as Coco Gauff Bias Blinds Her in Iga Swiatek and Jasmine Paolini’s Final
Chris Evert’s commentary once added fuel to the fire of tennis matches, but now her commentary has taken a different turn. Tennis fans have grown weary of Chris Evert’s biased commentary towards Iga Swiatek, frustrated fans recently resorted to social media to voice their disapproval of Evert’s remarks after the 20-year-old Gauff’s French Open run ended in the quarterfinals.
Many felt that the umpire had called the match incorrectly, and the young American lost to Iga Swiatek in tears. Fans were sympathetic to the US Open champion, but they also held tennis great Chris Evert accountable for her generous support of her fellow countrywoman.
A fan wrote on Twitter that Evert’s biasedness has created a problem for him: “Chris Evert on comms does not work for me… it’s like her voice is just so much louder than whichever british commentator she’s with, it’s jarring.”
To the annoyance of many tennis fans, her commentary sessions have continuously concentrated on Coco Gauff’s on-and off-court activities. “Chris Evert is the most annoying commentator 🤬 all she does is notice Iga’s ‘oh she should be here by now, oh she’s taking her time blah blah.’” a fan wrote, expressing their anger with the perceived one-sided bias.
On the other hand, a fan shared a sentiment that echoed a growing dissatisfaction with Evert’s commentary, which many feel overly favors Gauff. “LMAOOO Chris Evert really say if she met a Coco Gauff in final she would be more stressed out than Paolini.”
Another fan also emphasized how the semi-final class between the world number one and the young American could have turned with her biased comments, “Chrissie saying that iga would b more nervous if she were facing coco in this match and ehhh…im not so sure.”
Even though a lot of people could be supporting Gauff, a commentator is supposed to remain impartial. A fan focused on that part and wrote, “Chris Evert the most annoying commentator 🤬 all he does is notice iga’s “oh she should be here by now, oh she’s taking her time blah blah.”
During a tense argument with the umpire in the French Open semifinal, the 18-time Grand Slam champion vehemently defended tearful-eyed Gauff, making it clear that she would never lie.
During the match, the umpire gave Swiatek the point as Gauff’s return struck the net, which infuriated the third seed. The American got into a furious debate, claiming that because the linesperson’s call arrived before her ball was hit, the point should be replayed. But the umpire would not budge, which led Coco Gauff to question her interpretation of the rules.
After the match, the former world number one stated, “She is right, by the way. Coco Gauff is right, absolutely. She would never, ever tell a lie to the umpire. She is crying. That is awful, awful officiating, the umpire’s decision. She is saying that she had a play on it.” However, even though Evert supported the young American, things didn’t work out their way, helping Swiatek make her way into the final.
