Coco Gauff, number 2 in the world, surprised and eliminated in Wimbledon by Emma Navarro
Emma Navarro might not have been the favorite to win but she showed no mercy against her fellow American Coco Gauff to take the match of the last round of 16 of Wimbledon’s 2024 edition 6-4 and 6-3 after one hour and sixteen minutes.
A great opportunity has gone away for the current world number two to win the title in London, after other contenders have lost. But Navarro did not give her any option, as she was much more involved and concentrated on the court and Gauff succumbed to the game of the world number 17 who will face Jessica Paolini for a place in the semifinals of the tournament.
At 23 years old, Navarro is participating in Wimbledon for the second time and last year she was eliminated in the first round. “I played very aggressively. Coco is a great player, I knew she wouldn’t make it easy for me, so I wanted to be aggressive and put her under pressure, I think I achieved that,” Navarro said, who has already achieved her best result in a Grand Slam, surpassing the round of 16 they had reached at the last Roland Garros.
Coco Gauff, winner of the last US Open, is the second Grand Slam champion that Navarro has beaten in this Wimbledon edition, after she defeated the Japanese Naomi Osaka in the second round.
Osaka has currently fallen to 113th place in the ranking but who was a two-time champion from the United States Open (2018, 2020) and the Australian Open (2019, 2021).
At 20 years old, Gauff became known to the general public at the 2019 Wimbledon, when she won in the first round at just 15 years old against the emblematic Venus Williams. However, he never managed to reach the quarterfinals in the London tournament and on this occasion she was left out of that round again.
