Andy Reid plans to give Travis Kelce a new role if he decides not to retire after losing the Super Bowl, according to reports

Travis Kelce has been a cornerstone of the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense for over a decade but if he wants to stick around he has to accept some new rules from Andy Reid to continue his partnership with Patrick Mahomes.

The 35-year-old is coming off the worst season in his career, recording 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns, in what is by far his lowest yardage total since 2014 as critics wonder if he’s past it.

However, he still set records, becoming the fastest tight end to 12,000 career yards and surpassing Tony Gonzalez as the Chiefs’ all-time touchdown leader proving that he has something to add.

Yet after a crushing 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, questions are swirling about Kelce’s future within the team and perhaps even the NFL, with even his colleagues unsure of his next move.

His performance in February 9’s Super Bowl consisted of just four catches for 39 yards and perfectly highlighted the struggles of the Chiefs’ offense and the need for revolution at the Arrowhead, as reports suggest Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is already planning for a new role

A Shift to Veteran Leadership
According to Nate Taylor of The Fan 96.5, the Chiefs want Kelce to return for the final year of his contract, but under a reduced role. Rather than being the focal point of the offense, he would be utilized as a situational playmaker and mentor, helping to develop his likely successors.

This shift means fewer targets from Mahomes and a transition away from being the go-to offensive weapon. If Kelce accepts this role, it will allow the Chiefs to gradually transition to a younger tight end corps with a degree of stability.

The team recently acquired Peyton Hendershot from the Dallas Cowboys, signaling their intent to build for the future and at just 25 years old, Hendershot, along with Noah Gray and Anthony Firkser, could help fill the void left if Kelce chooses to step away.

Kelce has until March 14, 2025, to make a decision, coinciding with his $11.5 million roster bonus deadline. If he stays, he’ll continue as Reid’s trusted veteran presence. If he retires, the Chiefs will officially enter a new era at tight end.
